Patna, Dec 16: As the death toll in the Chhapra hooch tragedy rose to 53, the political spat between the Janata Dal United (JDU) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified.

In response to the recent deaths in the Saran district hooch disaster, the BJP has started a vicious attack on Nitish Kumar, claiming him accountable for the catastrophe. Additionally, it has requested that the president rule Bihar, and today a delegation of leaders will meet with Governor Paghu Chauhan.

To visit with the families affected by the hooch deaths, a delegation of BJP leaders travelled to Chhapra with the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council, Samrat Chaudhary, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Vijay Sinha. The leaders criticised Nitish Kumar for saying that those who use fake booze will perish and demanded his resignation.

“The Bihar CM is fully responsible (for the hooch deaths) and must resign. Adequate compensation must be given to the affected families. By cremating bodies without doing a post-mortem, they (government) wanted to show fewer deaths. We’ve come here to unearth the truth,” Samrat Chaudhary was quoted by ANI as saying.

On Thursday, a number of BJP MLAs held a protest in the state Assembly over the hooch deaths, carrying banners and shouting abuse at the administration. The BJP ripped into Nitish Kumar on Monday, the second day of protests, and continued to stir up trouble inside the legislature over the Saran hooch disaster.

“So far no strict action has been taken against any those responsible for such deaths. Nitish Kumar is directly responsible for this, poisonous liquor is being sold by him in this way and poor people are losing their lives. Rather than expressing condolences, he is saying such deaths,” the family members said.
