Mumbai: In response to the ongoing row surrounding the recent inspection of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray’s luggage, the BJP has shared a video showing Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ bags being checked. The BJP stated that, unlike Mr. Thackeray, Mr. Fadnavis did not make an issue over the routine inspection.
The BJP took to social media, highlighting that Mr. Fadnavis’ bags were checked in Kolhapur on November 5 and in Yavatmal on November 7, a scenario he handled without complaint. The party remarked, “Some leaders have a habit of making a fuss,” indirectly referencing Mr. Thackeray’s reaction to his own luggage being searched.

The controversy began when a video surfaced showing Mr. Thackeray confronting an officer at Yavatmal and questioning why leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Devendra Fadnavis were not subjected to similar checks. “I won’t stop you… but did you check the bags of Fadnavis, Modi, or Shah?” Mr. Thackeray asked.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut remarked that while they do not oppose searches, they should be conducted impartially. He also alleged that substantial funds were being circulated in constituencies where leaders such as Eknath Shinde are campaigning. In response, Shinde Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde dismissed the allegations, noting that Mr. Shinde’s bags were also inspected during earlier campaigns without any protests.
The BJP further pointed to the Opposition’s ‘save Constitution’ slogan, implying that the rule of law should be upheld in action, not just words.
Maharashtra votes on November 20, with a close contest expected between the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) coalition, the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), and the opposition alliance of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction).
