BJP Expels Former Union Minister RK Singh, Suspends Two Others Amid Bihar Rebellion

Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a major post-election disciplinary crackdown in Bihar, expelling former Union Power Minister and ex-Ara MP RK Singh for six years over anti-party activities. The action follows a wave of dissent within the state unit after Singh’s repeated public criticism of the party and its allies.

Sweeping Action To Curb Rebellion

Along with Singh’s expulsion, the BJP has also suspended MLC Ashok Kumar Agarwal and Katihar Mayor Usha Agarwal on similar charges. Singh has been directed to submit a formal explanation within a week. The move marks one of the party’s strongest disciplinary actions in recent years, signalling zero tolerance for internal rebellion.

Power Project Scam Allegations Trigger Rift

The rift widened after RK Singh accused the Bihar government of a ₹60,000–₹62,000 crore scam in awarding the 2,400 MW Bhagalpur (Pirpainti) power project to Adani Power Ltd. Singh alleged the government agreed to buy electricity at ₹6 per unit, calling it a massive burden on the poor and middle class. His statements were seized upon by the Congress and Left leaders to attack the NDA, intensifying the controversy.

Defiance And Public Criticism

Singh, who served as Union Power Minister from 2017 to 2024, continued to criticise the NDA leadership and even urged voters to reject tainted candidates — including some fielded by the alliance — or opt for NOTA. Earlier this month, he posted documents on social media supporting his corruption claims and accused the Election Commission of failing to uphold the Model Code of Conduct.

Other Leaders Face Action

The BJP also suspended Ashok Kumar Agarwal for campaigning for his son, Saurav Agarwal, who contested against BJP nominee Tar Kishore Prasad as a VIP candidate. Meanwhile, Usha Agarwal, the Mayor of Katihar, was suspended for alleged anti-party activities, becoming the third leader to face disciplinary action in this purge.
