New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed strong disapproval over the disruptions in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Thursday. This followed Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh’s display of a banner advocating for Article 370, sparking heated responses.
Addressing a press conference, senior BJP leader Smriti Irani sharply criticized the opposition’s INDIA bloc, asserting, “Through the BJP workers, I want to assure the citizens of India and tell the leaders of INDI Alliance that Article 370 will not be restored, and their attempts to separate Jammu and Kashmir from India will fail.”
The assembly ruckus unfolded after a resolution, tabled by Jammu and Kashmir’s deputy chief minister and National Conference (NC) leader Surinder Choudhary, sought to initiate dialogue for restoring the region’s special status. This prompted BJP legislators to tear up the resolution document, storm the well of the House, and protest vocally against the speaker.
Highlighting the implications, Irani questioned the stance of Congress and the INDIA bloc: “After the removal of Article 370, rights were granted to the tribal community in Jammu and Kashmir. Will the Congress and the INDI Alliance oppose those rights? Yesterday’s resolution shows their tactical support for extremism and terrorism.”
She further accused the opposition of undermining the Indian Constitution, stating, “The scenes from Jammu and Kashmir, where the Constitution of India was metaphorically torn apart, demonstrate an audacious disregard for the rights of tribal communities, Dalits, and women. The Congress-led INDI Alliance’s actions will not be tolerated by a vigilant India.”
