New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp attack on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjeeon Monday, accusing her of ignoring communal violence in Murshidabad and alleging a deep-seated bias against Hindus.
During a press conference at BJP headquarters, party spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra said the chief minister’s decision not to visit the violence-affected areas reveals her “hatred for Hindus.” His remarks came after clashes in Murshidabad claimed three lives and left several injured during protests against the recently amended Waqf Act.
“Had this violence affected our Muslim brothers, Mamata Banerjee would have been agitating and sitting in a protest camp by now,” said Patra. He claimed that the victims of the clashes were associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), but neither CPI(M) nor Mamata Banerjee had acknowledged them, simply because “their names are Hargobind and Chandan.”
The BJP further accused CPI(M) of political hypocrisy for allegedly refusing to accept the deceased as party workers due to their religion.
According to police sources, over 200 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest, which erupted during demonstrations against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The violence has triggered a political storm, with the BJP holding the Trinamool Congress government responsible for what it calls a “complete breakdown of law and order.”
The BJP has maintained that Mamata Banerjee’s silence and absence from the affected regions reflect selective outrage. The party has also questioned why Banerjee had not taken steps to console the families of the victims.
As tensions remain high, the Calcutta High Court has directed the continued deployment of central forces in Murshidabad and surrounding districts to restore peace and stability.
