New Delhi, Feb 2: The BJP will run for all 60 seats in the Meghalaya Assembly and, in an alliance with the state’s ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, will run for 20 of the 60 seats in the Nagaland polls.

Rituraj Sinha, the BJP’s northeast co-incharge, told reporters today that the party will run for office in Meghalaya under the slogan “M-Power” (Modi power), arguing that the state’s residents have confidence in the prime minister. He claimed that they think Modi is the only one who can guarantee a government devoid of corruption and accelerate development.

Temjen Imna Along, the BJP chief in Nagaland, and Ernest Mawrie, the party’s central election committee-approved candidates for Nagaland and Meghalaya, respectively, were also nominated.

Despite the fact that central government programmes have reached them, Sinha asserted that residents of the northeastern states are tired of corruption and the slow pace of development. But they think that their execution could have been done better, he said.

In Meghalaya, the National People’s Party, led by chief minister Conrad Sangma, is in charge. Despite being a member of his government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and he have never had particularly cordial relations. In the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP ran on 47 seats and won two.

In addition to noting that Modi had travelled to the northeast area more than 50 times throughout his reign, Sinha expressed confidence that the saffron party will perform well in the state elections. He said that Modi has always travelled to the area with some sort of development package, making this more than all of the previous prime ministers’ visits combined.

The ‘Look East’ policy has been changed into a ‘act policy’ by the prime minister. In the region, which has also seen an era of calm, the federal government has worked to put the HIRA (highways, internet connectivity, roadways, and airport) plan into action, according to Sinha.

Notably, both states will go to polls on February 27 and the counting of votes is due on March 2.
