California, Jan 24: Seven people were killed in two separate shootings at agricultural facilities in the city of Half Moon Bay in US California on Tuesday. This was the second mass shooting that has taken place over the period of three days.
A 67-year-old resident of the community is accused of opening fire at two countryside locations about a mile away, shooting some of the victims in front of children who lived nearby and had recently been released from school.
Four people died and a fifth was injured from gunshot wounds at one location, and three others were found dead at another several miles away.
“This kind of shooting is horrific; it’s a tragedy we hear about too often,” San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said. “For children to witness this is unspeakable.”
As per AP reports, the suspect has been identified as 67-year-old farm worker Zhao Chunli. He shot his Chinese co-workers before fleeing the scene.
“Suspect is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time,” said San Mateo County Sheriff in a tweet.
“The gunman was taken into custody after he was found in his vehicle in the parking lot of the Half Moon Bay substation,” the sheriff’s office said.
He was taken into custody and a weapon was found in his car. A video has also been released of his arrest showing police officers pinning Zhao Chunli to the ground before taking him into custody. The precise locations of the shootings have not been confirmed yet and the intention for the shooting is under investigation.
This comes days after a 72-year-old man killed 10 people at a Chinese New Year event in Monterey Park, California. Police tracked him down to a van and arrested him.
