New Delhi, Feb 5: Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly said on Saturday (local time) that she will travel to India for the first time on February 6 and 7, with the goal of strengthening partnerships and bilateral ties.

“As I depart for my first official trip to India, I’m looking forward to strengthen our relationship, putting our Indo-Pacific Strategy into action,” tweeted Joly.

The government press release said, “She will draw on the two nations’ shared history of democracy and pluralism, shared commitment to a rules-based international order and multilateralism, and shared interest in deepening and expanding our people-to-people relationships.”

To strengthen Canada’s engagement with India under the Indo-Pacific Strategy and generate possibilities for progress and prosperity for the two countries, Minister Joly will meet with her Indian counterpart S Jaishankar in Delhi.

According to the press release, both ministers will pinpoint areas where Canadian and Indian interests overlap and where the two nations can work together more closely on international and regional challenges. This is especially important given that India is currently in the G20 presidency.

Minister Joly will also discuss Canada’s aggressive agenda with India under the Indo-Pacific Strategy with important figures in the country’s business and civil society groups.

According to the press release, she will work to build momentum for a more solid, open, and prosperous relationship between Canada and the Indo-Pacific region, one that firmly supports regional peace, stability, and the rules-based international order.
