New Delhi: A major controversy erupted on Thursday after a large amount of cash was reportedly recovered from the residence of Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma. The issue has triggered serious concerns across the judiciary and political corridors, prompting an uproar in Parliament and a response from the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
In the Lok Sabha, Congress whips Manickam Tagore and Renuka Chowdhury submitted an adjournment motion, demanding a discussion on the explosive discovery made following a fire incident at Justice Varma’s official residence. The recovery of cash has also led to widespread speculation and concerns over judicial integrity.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has reportedly called for a high-level meeting to address the developments surrounding the case.
Delhi High Court Chief Justice Submits Report To CJI
Reports confirm that Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya has submitted a detailed report to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna regarding the recovery. Sources suggest that Justice Upadhyaya initiated an internal inquiry, collecting evidence and coordinating with agencies including the fire department and Delhi Police.
The incident came to light after a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s residence. During the response operations, authorities allegedly discovered a significant volume of unaccounted cash, which raised red flags and necessitated formal reporting to the apex court.
Judiciary Under Scrutiny
The revelations have intensified calls for judicial accountability, with opposition parties urging transparency and swift action. The Congress has insisted on a parliamentary debate to discuss the larger implications of the episode, particularly regarding judicial conduct and integrity.
While official confirmation of the cash amount is still awaited, the Delhi High Court has refrained from making any public statement, and the matter is now under review by the Chief Justice of India.
