Patna, Jan 7: The first phase of the caste-based census begins in Bihar on Saturday. All 38 districts would be subject to a two-stage caste-based headcount. All households in the state will be tallied during the first phase, which will end by January 21.

Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, stated that the caste-based census will allow the administration to carry out development projects for the state’s underprivileged in a methodical manner.

Yadav further criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party for its ‘anti-poor’ policies and claimed that the opposition group opposed conducting the study.

“The caste-based survey will start in Bihar today. It will give us scientific data so that budget and social welfare schemes can be made accordingly. BJP is anti-poor. They don’t want this to happen,” Yadav said while talking to ANI.

The survey’s second phase, which is anticipated to take place from April 1 to April 30, will gather information on people from all castes, subcastes, socioeconomic circumstances, etc.

The Bihar cabinet decided to conduct a caste census on June 2 of last year, months after the Center had rejected the idea.

In 38 districts with 534 blocks and 261 urban local bodies, there are an estimated 12.70 crore people living in an estimated 2.58 crore households. The survey’s conclusion is scheduled for May 31, 2023.

Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, stated earlier on Friday that the government has trained personnel to conduct caste-based censuses while taking into account the subcastes in the state and the individuals’ financial situations.

Additionally, he said that the census will help the state and the nation thrive.
