Chief Justice of India Justice N.V Ramana arrives in Ranchi today

Ranchi, July 22: Justice N.V. Ramana, the Chief Justice of India, is travelling to the capital of Jharkhand today in the evening in order to attend the Justice S.B. Sinha Memorial Inaugural Lecture on Saturday.

It is organised by the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), Ranchi Judicial Academy Jharkhand, and National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi.

Chief Justice Ramana, who is also Patron-in-Chief of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), will be guest of honour of the programme. Before delivering his lecture he will inaugurate the Sub-Divisional Court at Chandil in Saraikela-Kharsawan district and Sub-Divisional Court at Nagar Untari in Garhwa, on line. After his lecture, he will also distribute scholarships to the children who have lost both parents or breadwinners to the Covid-19 pandemic under JHALSA’s Project Shishu.

Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Dr Ravi Ranjan besides Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Justice S. Chandrashekhar, Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad will also remain present on the occasion.

A conference on mediation has also been organized on the occasion. The topics to be discussed include ‘Role of Mediators in Securing and Safeguarding Property Rights of Orphans particularly in the context of tribal state’ and ‘Role of Mediators in Securing Better Education, Legal Adoption & Welfare of Orphans particularly in the context of tribal state.’

Notably, Justice S. B. Sinha was born in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, on August 8, 1944. He graduated from H.E. School in Dhanbad after passing the matriculation exam, and in 1967 he earned a B.L (Bachelor of Law) from Chota Nagpur Law College. After joining the Dhanbad District Court in 1968, Justice moved his practice to Ranchi in 1976, when the Patna High Court’s Permanent Bench was established.

He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Patna High Court. Subsequently, he was appointed the first Government Advocate of the Ranchi Bench of the Patna High Court and was elevated to the Bench of Patna High Court on 9 March 1987. He was transferred to the Calcutta High Court on May 11, 1994. He has served as the Chief Justice of the High Courts of Calcutta, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi, before being elevated to the Supreme Court.

Justice Sinha died on 19 March 2019 at the age of 74 after a brief illness in New Delhi.
