Beijing, March 14: China is currently experiencing its greatest outbreak of the virus in two years, as most countries across the world open up and resumes regular life with a drop in Covid-19 cases.
In a single day on Sunday, the country reported 3,100 new locally transmitted cases, the largest number in two years. The Omicron strain has been blamed by certain local authorities for the increase in cases.
As a result of the increase in incidents, millions of people in various parts of China are now living in fear.
The National Health Commission stated on Sunday that new locally transmitted cases in China had surpassed 3,100 for the second day in a row, after exceeding 1,000 for two days in a row. This is the greatest level in the last two years.
According to the reports, some local health officials have ascribed the increase in cases in China to the Omicron version, which is more transmissible but causes less severe symptoms than the original Covid-19 virus.
The Chinese government has placed the high-tech Shenzhen metropolis under lockdown to prevent the virus from spreading further. The city’s population exceeds 17 million people.
Shenzhen will close all neighbourhoods and villages, as well as stop bus and metro services, from Monday through Sunday, according to reports.
China has decided to authorise the use of fast antigen tests to diagnose Covid-19 for the first time as part of its reaction to the latest epidemic. This was done to aid in the early detection of instances.
Shenzhen, meanwhile, will conduct three rounds of Covid-19 tests across the city this week.
