China has responded to the death sentence handed to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by stating it is strictly Bangladesh’s “internal affair”, refraining from further comment even as international reactions continue to pour in.
China’s Position On The Verdict
Beijing said the ruling by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal — which sentenced Hasina to death for alleged crimes against humanity during last year’s student-led uprising — is an internal issue of Dhaka. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated that China maintains a policy of good neighbourliness and hopes for Bangladesh’s stability and development.
Hasina, who was tried in absentia after fleeing to India in August 2024, has dismissed the charges as politically motivated. China also noted that it maintains friendly relations with all people of Bangladesh without taking sides in domestic political matters.
Details Of The Tribunal’s Ruling And Global Reaction
Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were both awarded the death sentence, while former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a reduced five-year term for cooperating with investigators.
According to UN human rights reports, nearly 1,400 people were killed during the 2024 protest crackdown. The UN said that while the verdict marks an “important moment” for victims, it regretted the use of the death penalty and reiterated its opposition to capital punishment under all circumstances.
Hasina, a long-time ally of India, has been living in New Delhi since her ouster and continues to claim the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus aims to destroy the Awami League.
