CID Seeks District-Wise Report on Police Personnel Posted in NAFIS Units Over Lapses

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department (CID) has taken a strict view of negligence in the functioning of NAFIS units across the state and has sought detailed reports from all districts regarding police officers and personnel currently posted in these branches.

Concern Over Frequent Transfers and Lack of Information

The CID has flagged repeated transfers of trained personnel from National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) branches without prior intimation as a serious issue. According to the CID headquarters, such unreported changes are disrupting the critical process of uploading fingerprint data of accused persons. When the Fingerprint Bureau contacts district NAFIS units, it is often found that trained personnel have already been reassigned elsewhere without any formal communication to the CID.

Impact on Criminal Data Management

Under the NAFIS system, fingerprints of arrested individuals are digitally stored, a process that requires specially trained police personnel. Each trained staff member is provided with a unique user ID and password to upload data. Sudden removal or transfer of these personnel leaves new staff without system access, causing fingerprint enrolment and data uploading work to come to a halt. The CID noted that similar instructions were issued in November 2025, but compliance has remained poor.

Instructions Issued to District SPs

Taking the matter seriously, the CID has directed all district Superintendents of Police to submit a complete list of personnel currently posted in their respective NAFIS branches within three days. The department has made it clear that any further negligence or failure to follow guidelines may attract strict administrative action.
