Ranchi: The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee has raised strong objections to the Election Commission’s decision regarding the Special Intensive Electoral Roll revision in Bihar, calling it an attack on constitutional rights and democracy. Addressing a press conference in Ranchi, Congress in-charge K. Raju accused the Election Commission of undermining the voting rights of nearly two crore migrant workers who work outside the state.
Concerns Over Citizenship Verification for Voters
K. Raju argued that, for the first time in history, the Election Commission appears to be linking voting rights to proof of citizenship—a responsibility that constitutionally belongs to the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the Election Commission. “This decision effectively strips migrant workers of their right to vote,” Raju said. He further expressed concern that young voters registered after 2021 might also be forced to prove their citizenship under the new system, risking disenfranchisement if they fail to comply.
Raju appealed to the Supreme Court to intervene immediately, expressing hope that the court would issue an order halting the process. He warned that if legal relief does not come swiftly, the Jharkhand Congress will launch widespread protests across the state against the decision.
Congress Organizational Drive Reaches Final Stage
During the same press briefing, K. Raju also shared updates on the Congress’s ongoing “Sangathan Srijan” (Organization Building) program in Jharkhand. Launched three months ago, the initiative has distributed responsibilities among party leaders, appointing senior figures as district and block observers.
The campaign has now entered its final phase, which will involve block presidents, block observers, and mandal-level leaders staying in villages for two days to form Congress Gram Panchayats. These village-level bodies will hold monthly meetings to discuss local issues and party campaigns.
Raju emphasized that the campaign is being conducted with a focus on preserving the values of the Sarna Dharma Code and the PESA Act. He revealed that resolutions passed by Gram Sabhas during this process will be taken to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in a demonstration and presented to the President of India.
