New Delhi, Sept 25: Aryadan Mohammed, a prominent Congressman and eight-term lawmaker, passed away here on Sunday, according to his family at the age of 87.
Three-time minister Aryadan Mohammed has spent the last week receiving care at a private hospital. From 1977 through 2011, he served as the Nilambur constituency’s representative eight times.
In the first E K Nayanar cabinet, Aryadan Mohammed served as a minister. In the governments led by Oommen Chandy and A K Antony, he also rose to the position of minister.
“The body will be taken to Nilambur later in the day where the public can pay respects. He was admitted in the ICU for the past one week,” his son Aryadan Shoukath said.
He announced that the funeral would be place on Monday at 9 am. In the meantime, officials from all political parties expressed their sorrow over the death of the senior Congressman.
The veteran Congressman’s death was mourned by Kerala’s chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, who also praised him as a distinguished lawmaker.
“Mohammed had a political experience in working with and against the Left party. He was a noted legislator. He always upheld secular values,” Vijayan said.
