Lucknow, Oct.19: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress’ National Secretary, announced today that 40% of the party’s tickets in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections will be reserved for women. At a press conference today, she remarked, “Women can bring about change, and they need to go up.”
“This decision is for the girls of Uttar Pradesh…… This decision is for women who desire change,” said Priyanka, who had been put in command by her brother Rahul Gandhi three years ago for capturing Uttar Pradesh for the Congress.
Although there was a catch in this announcement. “The ticket will be determined by the candidate’s competency,” Priyanka added, who entered politics in January 2019 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
In Uttar Pradesh, caste has traditionally played a significant influence in elections. The BJP is perceived as aiming to appease the Brahmins in the upcoming elections, which are expected to be held next year.
Congress appears to be emphasising the gender issue in a state where several crimes against women have been documented in recent years. Some of these cases, such as the gangrape of a Dalit lady in Hathras and the case in Unnao, grabbed national headlines and sparked outrage.
Priyanka claimed individuals who “speak up” in the state are “crushed,” referring to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
