New Delhi, Jan 24: In connection with alleged incendiary comments delivered by Sharjeel Imam at Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh and the Jamia neighbourhood in Delhi, a Delhi court has ordered that he will be charged with sedition.
The accusations against Sharjeel Imam were framed under sections 124A (sedition), 153A, 153B, 505 of the IPC, and 13 of the UAPA, according to Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat.
Notably, Sharjeel Imam, a former JNU student and one of the main organisers of the Shaheen Bagh protest, was arrested in Bihar’s Jehanabad in 2020.
In December 2019, a Delhi court granted him bail in the case of reportedly delivering an inflammatory speech at Jamia Milia Islamia, which resulted in riots outside the campus.
“He is accused of delivering seditious speeches and inciting a particular section of the community to indulge in unlawful activities, detrimental to sovereignty and integrity of the nation,” the charge sheet against Imam mentioned.
“In the garb of protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, he exhorted people of a particular community to block the highways leading to the major cities and resort to ‘Chakka Jam’, thereby disrupting normal life,” it read.
In 2019, the Allahabad High Court had also granted him bail in a case pertaining to alleged provocative speech against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Aligarh Muslim University.
