New Delhi, July 17: An investigation has been started by Delhi customs to determine how a married couple who were recently detained with numerous handguns managed to successfully sneak 25 hand guns into the country via this international airport last December, an official said on Sunday.
The investigation was prompted by the couple’s admission to customs agents that they had smuggled 25 different types of weapons from Turkey valued Rs 12.5 lakh, the official said.
“An internal inquiry is being conducted to ascertain their claim and find out more details,” the officer said, requesting anonymity.
Notably, Customs officials said on Wednesday that they had detained a married couple from Gurugram for allegedly trying to smuggle 45 handguns worth Rs 22.5 lakh into the country at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport.
The customs officers have begun scrutinising the information provided by them after their admission.
Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is tasked with looking into occurrences of terrorism, has been alerted by the customs department about the seizure of 45 weapons from the pair.
He claimed that the husband and wife were detained with handguns made in Germany and Italy.
The customs officers claimed that efforts are being made to apprehend a second suspect who fled the Delhi airport after giving the couple two pieces of luggage containing firearms.
