New Delhi, May 22: In response to a defamation lawsuit brought by an NGO that claimed that the BBC’s documentary damaged India’s reputation, its judiciary, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Delhi High Court summoned the BBC on Monday.
In addition to serving notice on the BBC (UK), Justice Sachin Datta sought a response from the BBC (India) about the lawsuit brought by the Gujarat-based NGO Justice for Trial.
A two-part documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” was released by BBC (UK) and BBC (India) is the local operation office.
Senior attorney Harish Salve, who is representing the NGO, stated that the BBC is being sued for defamation because of a documentary that “defamed” India and its entire system, including the judiciary.
He argued that the documentary also implies negative things about the prime minister.
On behalf of the plaintiff, it was asserted that the documentary casts a slur on the nation’s reputation and makes defamatory accusations.
The high court said, “Issue notice to the respondents through all permissible modes” and set a new hearing date on September 15.
