The newly appointed members by Lt Governor in the MCD House received their oaths from the presiding officer Satya Sharma earlier in the day. When the mayoral election voting process was about to begin after the swearing-in ceremony, AAP councillor Mukesh Goyal objected, claiming that the members who had been nominated did not have the right to vote.
Further, Mukesh Goyal asked that the nominees be expelled from the House. His remark sparked BJP council members’ protests, which caused a commotion in the House. The House was then adjourned by Presiding Officer Satya Sharma without electing a mayor or deputy mayor.
Rajpal Singh, a councillor for the BJP, asserted that AAP leaders misbehaved with Gautam Gambhir, a party MP. According to Rajpal Singh, the BJP council members protested to it, causing a commotion that caused the MCD House to adjourn.
AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj requested that the mayoral election take place right away. He asserted that the BJP is terrified because an AAP candidate will undoubtedly be elected mayor.
The Delhi mayor election has been derailed twice in the last month. Conflicts between AAP and BJP council members forced the MCD House to postpone the mayoral elections on January 6.
Ashu Thakur and Shelly Oberoi are the contenders the AAP has put forth for the position of mayor. Rekha Gupta has been proposed by the BJP.
