New Delhi: The national capital witnessed one of its coldest nights of the season as temperatures plunged sharply, with several areas recording near-freezing conditions while air quality remained in the poor category.
Cold Wave Grips Multiple Areas
According to the India Meteorological Department, Ayanagar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 2.9 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Palam at 3.0 degrees Celsius, its coldest reading in several years. Safdarjung registered a minimum of 4.8 degrees Celsius, which is expected to fall further, while the Ridge area saw temperatures dip to 3.7 degrees Celsius. IMD has indicated that cold wave conditions are likely to persist across the city.
Fog, Smog And Air Pollution Add To Discomfort
A thin layer of fog and smog covered areas such as Dhaula Kuan and Sarai Kale Khan during early morning hours, reducing visibility and intensifying the chill. Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index stood at 293 on Monday morning, placing it in the ‘poor’ category, slightly worse than the previous day. The combination of biting cold, fog, and pollution has significantly impacted daily life in the capital.
Cold Conditions Continue Ahead
The city has been under persistent cold conditions for several days, with minimum temperatures remaining below normal. Weather officials noted that windy conditions and occasional rainfall have contributed to the sharp drop in temperatures. Despite the harsh weather, preparations and rehearsals for the upcoming Republic Day parade are continuing at Kartavya Path.
