Jamshedpur, Sept 30: A 34-year-old man who was an undertrial prisoner in the Ghaghidhih Central Jail committed suicide by jumping from stair on the jail premises under Parsudih thana area on Saturday morning.
The deceased identified as Vishwanath Soren was a resident of Bhilaipahadi in MGM thana area and was lodged in the jail since the past one year after being arrested in connection with a murder case.
It is learnt from the sources in the central jail that Soren was desperately trying to talk to his family members from a telephone inside the central jail for the past three days, but he was denied a chance to do so. Hence he could not tolerate the strong urge to contact his kin and ultimately prompted to take the drastic step out of impulse.
The undertrial had climbed on the stairs that lead to the first floor of the jail building. Having climbed up to the end of the stairs, he jumped down, causing grievous head injury.
The central jail administration rushed the injured to the MGM medical college hospital where he succumbed to his injury soon afterwards.
OC, Parsudih thana under whose jurisdiction the central jail falls confirmed about the suicide by the undertrial prisoner the jail premises.
“The undertrial prisoner Vishwanath Soren jumped from a stair and was fatally injured,” said the OC while talking to lagatar24.com.
The body had been shifted to MGM medical college mortuary where a postmortem will be conducted under a medical board.
The family members of the deceased have, however, demanded the district administration to find out the circumstances that led Vishwanath to take such drastic step.
