Jamshedpur, Sept 11: A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression that will cross the West Bengal and Odisha coasts resulting in heavy rain in Jharkand and the two neighbouring states from Sunday.

” The impact of the depression will be felt from Saturday itself. It will result in intermittent rains in Jamshedpur and other places in southern and north-eastern Jharkhand, ” said a weather official at IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre.

Weathermen, however, ruled out the possibility of the depression concentrating into a cyclonic storm.

Met officials explained that the formation of the depression shall become apparent in the inner parts of the Bay of Bengal from Saturday morning.

“The depression will intensify into a deep depression and is expected to cross Jharkhand on Monday, ” said a Met official.

The system is likely to turn into the strongest rain-bearing system of the month as it gains strength over the northwest and adjoining the west-central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours.

Satellite pictures suggested that the monsoon trough at mean sea level was on Saturday passing through Jaisalmer, Tikamgarh, Pendra Road, Paradip and stretched till east-central Bay of Bengal extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level.

The Met centre also issued an alert of moderate lightning and thunder in isolated pockets of Jharkhand during the next 72- hours.

Several places in southern and central Jharkhand woke up to overcast condition with intermittent rains on Saturday.

The local weather office in Jamshedpur recorded around 3 mm of rain.

This was the second low pressure that impacted Jharkhand’s weather condition in September so far.
