Dhanbad boat mishap:  Rescue drive suspended, minister pays Rs 4 lakh compensation to victims’ kin

Dhanbad,  March 2: Transport Minister  Champai Soren and Jamtara Cong MLA Dr Irfan Ansari today gave away compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family members of each victim of Barakar river boat mishap after the search operation for missing persons was suspended on Tuesday evening.

A senior officer of the Jamtara administration said that a total of 14 bodies were recovered in the boat mishap. Transport Minister Champai Soren and Jamtara Cong MLA Dr  Irfan Ansari jointly paid a cheque of  Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the kin of nine victims.
As per the official record,  14 villagers, including women and children died when the boat going from Barbindia  Ghat of Nirsa ( Dhanbad) to Birgao of Jamtara district capsized in  Damodar river in the evening of February 24. Five people sailed over safely after a mishap from the river.

On the demand of Jamtara Cong MLA  Dr Irfan Ansari and  Nirsa BJP MLA Aparna Sengupta, chief minister Hemant Soren had announced  a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family members of each victim.
Meanwhile, the administration suspended the rescue operation of NDRF and local divers after 14 bodies were fished out in five days’ search.
