Dhanbad: NHRC sends notices to Jharkhand govt over selling of spurious milk

Dhanbad, Jan 3: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the Jharkhand government over the reported selling of spurious milk in Dhanbad.

NHRC while taking a suo moto cognizance of a media report, shot off notice on Monday to the Chief Secretary (CS), Director General of Police (DGP) Jharkhand, and Director General Health Services, ministry of health and family welfare to file a fact-finding report about media news in six weeks.

A print media of Dhanbad had on December 30, published a report that through refined and caustic soda, one-litre milk is being made 15 litres of spurious milk to earn profit.

“The commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amounts to a violation of rights related to the health of the people. Going its contents, prima facie, it appears to be culpable negligence on the part of a public servant,” said the commission notice.

NHRC has asked Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on the prevalence of spurious milk while DGP has been asked about the registration of FIRs by mentioning the penal offences invoked, the progress of investigation and details of the accused persons if any. 

The report must also mention the preventive actions taken or proposed to be taken to eradicate the selling of spurious milk and other adulterated food items in Jharkhand.
