Dhanbad, Oct 14: The local police recovered the bodies of a woman and her infant from a well today in the morning at Sariyabhita village under Baliapur police station, around 24 km away from district headquarters.

Officer-in-charge of Baliapur police station, Pankaj Verma, told the media persons that the deceased were identified as Mangla Devi ( 27) and her six-month-old daughter Rita Kumari of Sariyabhita village. They have taken Panna Lal Mahto, the husband of Mangla Devi, in custody for interrogation.

Villagers gathered for bodies

As per information, Mangla Devi, a resident of Guridih village of West Bengal, had been missing from her house for last one week but her husband did not report it to the Baliapur police station. She was the second wife of Panna Lal Mahto, who is a farmer.

The villagers spotted the bodies on Thursday night and informed Panchayat Mukhiya Sanjit Gorai who then informed the police about it. The police team reached the village in the early morning today and fished out the mutilated bodies from the well.

Words spreading around suggest that the daily bickering between husband and wife might the reason behind this incident.

The Baliapur police station officer-in-charge said that the bodies were sent to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital in Dhanbad for postmortem and legal action would be initiated only after getting the report.
