Dhanbad: Tata Steel, Sankara Nethralaya organize free cataract check-up camp in Baghmara

Dhanbad, July 2: Tata Steel Foundation Jharia Division in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) organized a free cataract check-up camp at Baghmara community health centre (CHC) of Dhanbad for checkups and operation of affected persons.

The official said that the screening of the people would be carried out till July 5 and medicos of Sankara Nethralaya and Tata Jamadoba Hospital will start operations on affected patients from July 6 onward.

Dhanbad Civil Surgeon Dr Shyam Kishore Kant and General Manager of Tata Steel Jharia Division Sanjay Rajoria jointly inaugurated the camp at Baghmara Community Health Centre.

On the occasion, Sanjay Rajoria said that healthcare for the community through social interventions has been a thrust area for Tata Steel.

“We are thankful to Sankara Nethralaya for joining in serving the community along with us. I would request the people who have come here to follow what the doctors suggest. The eye is a sensitive organ and proper care must be taken to preserve it,” he said.

The official said on the first day of camp, more than 235 individuals registered for an eye check-up. The cataract camp will be organised from July 1-10. Individuals can register for eye check-ups from July 1 to 5, The selected patients will be operated upon from July 6 to 10,

Tata Steel Jharia division has been organizing this camp since 2015. So far, more than 4743 individuals have registered for a free eye check-up and more than 1588 cataract patients have been successfully operated upon.

“The main objective of this camp was to reach out to the aged people with cataracts in remote villages. The screening and operation facilities provided to the patients through Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) were completely free of charge. MESU has been developed by Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai in collaboration with IIT Madras,” said the general manager.

On the occasion, Rajesh Kumar, the unit head of Tata Steel Foundation, Jamadoba, and Dr Manish Kumar, medical officer In-charge, Baghmara CHC, were also present.
