Ranveer Singh’s action thriller Dhurandhar 2, despite strong box office performance, has landed in controversy as a petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a ban on its release in Tamil Nadu ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Concerns Over Election Code Violation
According to reports, the petitioner argued that the film deals with politically sensitive themes and releasing it before elections could violate the Model Code of Conduct. The plea urged the court to halt the film’s screening in the state until the election process is completed.
Court Seeks Formal Petition Filing
The matter was mentioned orally before Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice G. Arul Murugan. However, the court directed the petitioner to file a proper writ petition and then seek urgent hearing. The final decision will be taken after formal proceedings.
Another Film Also Under Scrutiny
In a related development, actor Vijay’s film Jan Nayakan has also run into trouble. The Central Board of Film Certification has reportedly withheld its certification citing election guidelines and referred the matter to the Election Commission.
Film’s Plot And Star Cast
Dhurandhar 2 is set against the backdrop of Karachi’s underworld and touches upon real-life events such as the Kandahar hijack, the 2001 Parliament attack, and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Ranveer Singh plays a covert intelligence agent, alongside actors Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, and Rakesh Bedi.
Debate Over Political Content Intensifies
The controversy has reignited debates around the release of politically themed films during election periods. With elections approaching, regulatory scrutiny has increased, and the court’s verdict will determine whether the film can continue its run in Tamil Nadu.
