Ranchi: Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi has praised the transformative rise of digital payments in India, calling it a vital part of everyday life. In a social media post, he remarked that digital transactions, once an optional mode before 2014, have now become a daily necessity for millions across the country.
Auto Drivers to Tea Vendors Embrace Digital Economy
Marandi, who also serves as the BJP’s Jharkhand state president, noted that even auto-rickshaw drivers and roadside tea vendors are now using digital payment platforms. From 2020 to 2025, over 6,500 crore digital transactions have taken place in India, with a cumulative value exceeding ₹1,200 lakh crore. He credited this massive shift to the Modi government’s policy initiatives and continued focus on technological infrastructure and analytics.
Transparency and Direct Benefits Through Digital Transactions
In another post, Marandi highlighted that increased digital transactions have reduced cash dependency, introduced transparency, and facilitated easier transfer of government benefits directly into citizens’ accounts. He emphasized that this is the backbone of “Digital India”—a framework built under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi that has made technology accessible and usable for every Indian.
Digital Economy Reaches Rural India
Citing the Reserve Bank of India’s Digital Payments Index (DPI), Marandi stated that the DPI had reached 465.33 as of September 2024, indicating that digital financial growth is no longer confined to urban areas but has spread nationwide. He underscored that the year-on-year rise in the index reflects the rapid adoption of digital payments throughout the country.
