New Delhi, Nov 14: Dimple Yadav, a prominent member of the Samajwadi Party and the spouse of the party’s leader Akhilesh Yadav, submitted her nomination on Monday for the December 5 byelection in Mainpuri.
Following the passing of party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav on October 10, the seat became vacant.
As a result of Netaji’s passing (Mulayam Singh), according to Akhilesh, Dimple filed the nomination in a straightforward manner without any fanfare.
“The family is united, all are being consulted in the party. Tribute to Netaji would historic win for the SP candidate. Voters knew Netaji who developed Mainpuri,” Akhilesh told reporters.

Neither Shivpal Yadav nor his son Aditya Yadav was present during the nomination.
In 2012, Dimple was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Kannauj constituency without facing any opposition when Akhilesh was elected chief minister and left his position to join the Uttar Pradesh legislative council.
She won the seat once more in the 2014 Lok Sabha election but lost it in the 2019 election to BJP contender Subrat Pathak. Including two by-election victories, the SP has won the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat nine times.
The Yadav family has held the seat since 2004. Mulayam alone won the seat five times, including in 2019, when he bested the BJP’s Prem Singh Shakya, who was his closest competitor. Prem Singh received only 30,0537 votes, compared to Mulayam’s 524,926 votes.
Following Mulayam’s passing last month, SP was rumoured to be considering Tej Pratap Singh Yadav, Dharmendra Yadav, Akhilesh, and Dimple as candidates for the seat. Dimple is running from the seat for the first time. She will become the first female MP in Mainpuri if she wins.
