Mumbai, Oct 8: Amidst the ongoing cruise drugs party case in Mumbai, the team of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 25 kg of heroin from a container at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port. Its price in the international market is said to be around Rs 125 crore. The Mumbai unit of DRI has arrested 62-year-old businessman Jayesh Shanghvi of Navi Mumbai. Shanghvi is accused of hiding heroin in a consignment of peanut oil from Iran and bringing it to Mumbai. A DRI official said that based on intelligence inputs, a container from Iran was nabbed in Navi Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva and heroin was found in its search.
The DRI official said that the container was imported by Sandeep Thakkar of Vaibhav Enterprises, which has an office in Masjid Bunder. The DRI team has also questioned him. Thakkar told the DRI that Sanghvi had offered him Rs 10,000 per consignment to import goods from Iran at his firm’s IEC. He had been doing business with Sanghvi for 15 years, so he trusted him.
The DRI arrested Shanghvi and registered a case against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). He was produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday. The court has sent him to DRI custody till October 11. After the arrest of Shanghvi, now the DRI team is also searching some other containers present at Mumbai Port since this morning.
Earlier in July, the DRI had seized 293 kg of heroin from the Mumbai port and arrested Prabhjit Singh, owner of Sandhu Exports Punjab.
