Dumka, Nov. 27: Police have recovered illegal country-made foreign liquor (CMFL) from a Bolero jeep at Rasikpur locality of the town here on Saturday following a tip-off.

Dy SP Noor Mustafa who led the police team to conduct the raid, said the consignment of the CMFL was meant for supply to Himachal Pradesh but was believed to be delivered anywhere in the neighbouring Bihar where prohibition is enforced.

“The Bolero jeep along with the consignment of the CMCL have been seized and an FIR against the owner and the driver of the vehicle was lodged with the town police station,” the Dy SP said, adding no one, however, could be arrested during the raid.

The officer-in-charge of the town police station Devbrat Poddar said that the value of the seized liquor consignment comprising different brands including Royal player was being assessed.

On previous occasions also a huge quantity of the CMFL of the same brand and valued at nearly Rs 2 crores had been seized by the excise department and the police in Jama and Masaliya police station areas while it was being transported to Bihar on trucks. Amar Mandal of Jama among others is believed to be operating the supply of the contraband item to the dry state of Bihar.

The excise department, meanwhile, downplayed the recovery of the illegal liquor from the district headquarters here although the death toll in the latest hooch tragedy has climbed to 33.

“We have come to know about the seizure of the illegal liquor by the police which will itself carry out the investigation,” excise superintendent Ashutosh Kumar said feigning ignorance about the quantity of the consignment.
