Jamshedpur, Jan 8 : East Singhbhum district reported 593 fresh cases of Covid -19 and two deaths during the past 24 hours. Both the victims were women and were the residents of Sonari.
The maximum number of 72 cases were reported from Telco followed by Mango where 44 positive cases were found.
On Thursday, the city witnessed it’s highest -ever single-day spike with 658 cases.
Jamshedpur’s positivity rate (the number of people testing positive for every 100 tests) has jumped to 6.48 per cent with the latest addition in cases.
Health department data revealed that in all 9,158 samples were tested on Friday.
The city has been producing a tidal wave of cases over the past days and the surge is believed to be driven by the Omicron variant. The variant is highly transmissible, according to experts.
As many as 42 doctors and 72 nurses of Tata Main Hospital (TMH) have also tested positive for the virus.
On Friday as many as 10 cases were reported from Bagbera, 6 from Baharagora, 42 from Baridih, 24 from Birsanagar, 22 from Bistupur and two from Burmamines.
Fresh cases were also reported from Ghatshila, Potka, Mosabani and suburban Sundernagar.
The cumulative coronavirus case count stands at 55,220 and the death count is now 1069, according to the latest health bulletin.
Health officials said that they would go for aggressive containment and stricter enforcement of health protocols such as wearing masks and keeping social distance.
The district has so far failed to report any Omicron case. All cases were of delta variant.
The vaccination for various age groups is also going on simultaneously. In all 17,286 people got their vaccines.
On Friday 7,162 teenagers in the age group of 15-18 years got their first dose of Covid vaccine. The vaccination for teens reached 18 per cent in the district.
