Ranchi, April 5: The Jharkhand government has declared a two-day state mourning as a mark of respect for Education Minister Jagarnath Mahto, who dies today while receiving treatment at Apollo Hospital in Chennai.
He had been admitted there on March 14 this year due to lungs problems. He had undergone lungs transplant surgery in the same hospital last year.
The state government has issued a notification to this effect, stating that all government offices will be closed today and that there will be no official functions in the state for two days.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren described Mahto’s death as an irreparable loss. “Irreparable harm! Our Tiger Jagarnath Da is no longer with us! Jharkhand has lost one of its greatest agitators, a combative, hardworking, and well-liked leader. Respected Jagarnath Mahto ji died while receiving treatment in Chennai. “May God grant the departed soul peace and the bereaved family strength to bear this difficult time of grief,” he tweeted.
Babulal Marandi, the leader of the BJP Legislature Party, expressed his condolences on Mahto’s death. “The departure of Jagannath ji, who fought like a warrior for a long time while defeating the disease. It is a tragic incident for the entire state of Jharkhand. Regardless of political differences, I have always admired his vitality. May God grant him a seat at his feet,” he wrote on Twitter.
