New Delhi, Dec 28: In a letter sent to Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, the Congress accused the Bharat Jodo Yatra of having major security lapses and demanded that party leader Rahul Gandhi be given the protection he needs.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said in a letter to the home minister that the Yatra’s security was repeatedly jeopardised when it entered Delhi on Saturday.

“Delhi Police, which comes under the Union Home Ministry, had completely failed in controlling the surging crowd and maintaining a perimeter around Rahul Gandhi, who is assigned Z+ Security,” the letter stated.

The situation, it continued, was so bad that Congress workers and Bharat Yatris who were accompanying Gandhi had to set up a perimeter for security. It claimed that the Delhi Police were silent spectators.

The opposition party also claimed that Yatra participants were being questioned by the Intelligence Bureau. In Haryana, a coalition led by the BJP is in power.

The party demanded stronger security for Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra when it entered Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, citing the sacrifices made by Congress leaders such as Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi for the country’s unity.

“Moving forward, Bharat Jodo Yatra is slated to enter the sensitive state of Punjab and J&K in the next phase starting from January 3, 2022. In this regard, I request you to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of Shri Rahul Gandhi, a Z+ protectee, and of all the Bharat Yatris and leaders joining the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” it said.
