New Delhi: India celebrated its 77th Republic Day with grandeur at Kartavya Path, showcasing military strength, cultural vibrancy, and the theme ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. This year, the parade also marked 150 years of the national song and featured distinguished European guests, symbolizing strengthening global ties.
European Leaders as Chief Guests
Adding diplomatic weight to the occasion, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Luís Santos da Costa attended as chief guests. The two leaders are on a state visit from January 25 to 27, following an invitation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A European Union contingent also participated in the parade, with flags representing the EU, its military staff, and naval forces Atalanta and Aspides.
Profiles of the Dignitaries
Ursula von der Leyen, a trained medical doctor, has held key roles in German politics since 2005 and currently serves her second term as European Commission President. She advocates strategic partnership with India and recently spoke of a near-final EU-India Free Trade Agreement at Davos.
Antonio da Costa, former Prime Minister of Portugal and now European Council President, brings a rich heritage and deep political experience. His leadership tenure focused on economic stability, green energy, and European unity.
Strategic Significance and Expected Agreements
During the visit, India and the EU are expected to announce a comprehensive security and defence strategic partnership. The deal, to be signed by EU Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, will make India the third Asian country after Japan and South Korea to ink such an agreement with the EU.
