New Delhi, Dec.6: An expert group is expected to meet on Monday to consider whether an ‘additional’ dose of COVID-19 vaccination should be given to immunocompromised people.
The question of delivering an extra dosage of COVID-19 vaccine to specific patients will be discussed at the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization meeting on December 6, according to government sources.
An additional dosage of vaccine differs from a booster dose, according to officials. It is given to immunocompromised and immunosuppressed individuals when the primary schedule of vaccination does not provide adequate protection from infection and disease, they explained.
On the other hand, a booster dose is given to an individual after a predetermined period when the immune response due to primary vaccination is presumed to have declined.
The Serum Institute of India (SII) recently sought approval from the drug regulator for Covishield as a booster dose against the novel coronavirus infection.
