New Delhi, Dec 31: The Union Finance Ministry on Friday stated that there is no plan to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs). Today, December 31, 2021, is the last day to file an income tax return.

“By 3pm today, 5.62 crore returns had been filed in total. Today, more than 20 lakh returns were filed. This year, 60 lakh more returns have been filed,” said revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj while making the announcement.

Following a letter from local merchants association Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) earlier this week, there has been speculation that the tax deadline could be extended once more for the financial year ending March 2021.

The deadline for reporting ITRs was already extended for another five months, to December 31.

In response to inquiries about the latest tax raids, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that when law enforcement officials undertake search operations, they only do so based on actionable intelligence.

“How does Uttar Pradesh’s former chief minister (Akhilesh Yadav) know that this is BJP’s money? Is he the partner? Is he scared,” Sitharaman said on the sidelines of a press conference of the GST council meeting.

Earlier in the day, the Income Tax Department raided various locations in Uttar Pradesh associated to some perfume sellers, including Pushparaj Jain, a Samajwadi Party MLC in Kannauj.

Officials stated searches are being done in Kannauj, Kanpur, NCR, Surat, and Mumbai, with a total of 30-40 locations.
