Pakur, Oct.11: Frequent recovery of brown sugar and arrest of drug traffickers from different parts of Santhal Pargana has raised alarm bells for the law enforcement agencies.

Police have arrested five people in connection with their alleged involvement in drug trafficking and recovered 11 pouches of brown sugar in Pakur.

The Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Pakur, Ajit Kumar Vimal said that a raid was conducted in a household in Bel Pokhar village under Mufassil police station area of the district on Monday following a tip-off.

Those who have been arrested include Tohid Sheikh, Sarikhel Sheikh, Noor Mohammed, Hafil Sheikh and Kabil Sheikh, all belonging to Belpokhar village itself who were sent to jail.

“The time when police raided the household, all five accused were spotted packaging brown sugar to be sold out to the customers, mostly teens and youths residing in both urban and rural pockets of the district,” the SDPO said adding that the consignment was brought from neighbouring state West Bengal.

Altogether 11 grams of brown sugar were seized from the possession of drug traffickers which were packed in equal numbers of pouches weighing one gram each.

In another raid a few days back, 650 grams of brown sugar were seized by Deoghar police in the last week of September by the police from Jasidih police station area of the district and altogether six drug traffickers were arrested in this connection.

The recoveries as such is indicative of the persisting network of drug traffickers in the region where mainly teens and youths are being targeted to sell them out after making them addicted to these contraband items.
