Ranchi: A violent mob attack on police personnel occurred on Tuesday in Koenara village under Lapung police station in Ranchi district, leaving two policemen injured and two villagers reportedly shot during the confrontation. Initial investigation has revealed the involvement of a former Naxalite, Punei Oraon, in orchestrating the attack.
According to the Ranchi Police, the violence stemmed from a land dispute, with some individuals allegedly instigating the crowd to seize land by inciting an attack on law enforcement officials. The police have begun identifying all involved troublemakers and are preparing legal action.
Attack was premeditated
The situation escalated when the officer-in-charge of Lapung police station, Santosh Kumar Yadav, visited the village to peacefully mediate the land dispute. However, what seemed like a routine intervention turned into a planned ambush.
Despite his attempt to calmly address the crowd, a group of anti-social elements present among the villagers began provoking others against him. The mob soon became hostile and launched a deadly attack on the officer using swords, axes, spears, and arrows.
Yadav was knocked to the ground by the mob. As he lay on the ground, some attackers were heard urging others to kill him. The mob continued their assault with clear intent to take the lives of the officer and other accompanying police personnel.
Overpowered and surrounded, the officers had no option but to fire controlled shots in self-defence to escape the escalating threat.
