NEW DELHI: Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, was detained in Sacramento, California, last Thursday, but sources clarified that it was due to a “local reason” and unrelated to any case in India. Deficiencies in his documents reportedly led to his detention.

Detention Details

Anmol Bishnoi, wanted in India for cases including the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique and firing outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s Mumbai residence, was apprehended by US authorities. It remains unclear whether he is still in custody.

Sources revealed that Anmol, who frequently visits the US while residing in Canada, is not currently facing extradition to India despite ongoing efforts by Indian authorities.

Indian Authorities’ Response

The Mumbai police had recently sent a proposal to the central government to expedite Anmol’s extradition. In October, they approached a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court to initiate the extradition process.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed an FIR in August 2022 against nine individuals, including the Bishnoi brothers, accusing them of conspiring to raise funds, recruit youth for terrorist activities, and carry out targeted killings.

A lookout circular was issued against Anmol in April, following his alleged claim of responsibility for firing near Salman Khan’s residence. The NIA also announced a ₹10 lakh reward for information leading to his capture.

Extradition Unlikely for Now

Despite the Indian government’s efforts, intelligence sources indicated there is no immediate possibility of Anmol Bishnoi being extradited to India.
