New Delhi, Jan 11: The two-time Emmy winner actress, Zendaya earned her first Golden Globe on Tuesday night for the lead role as ‘Rue Bennett’ in HBO’s Euphoria, taking home the award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.
The 26-year-old actress beat out other nominees – House of the Dragon‘s Emma D’Arcy, Ozark‘s Laura Linney, The Crown‘s Imelda Staunton and Alaska Daily‘s Hilary Swank.
Though the show, Euphoria, has been on the air since 2019, this marks the first time Zendaya has been nominated for and won a Golden Globe. She was not in attendance at the event held at Beverly Hills Hotel on Tuesday due to work commitments.
However, not long after the win, the actress posted a lengthy message to Instagram, full of thanks and gratitude for the win.
“I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to be there tonight, but I just wanted to say thank you to @goldenglobes for this incredible honor,” she wrote on Instagram.
“To my fellow nominees, it is a privilege to be named beside you, I admire you all deeply. Thank you to my Euphoria family, without you, none of this is possible,” she added.
She concluded, “Lastly, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has allowed Rue into theirs. I think everyone knows how much she means to me, but the fact that she can mean something to someone else is a gift. I’m honestly at a loss for words as I type this, all I can say is thank you thank you thank you.”
In Euphoria, Zendaya plays a high schooler who struggles with her addiction problems while also experiencing ups and downs in her relationships. Her performance was especially poignant in the second season as her character went through a relapse, got into a violent meltdown with her family and experienced severe withdrawal. The character is played effortlessly by Zendaya.
