Kolkata: The father of a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered during a break at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has shared heart-wrenching details about his daughter’s passion for medicine and the devastating impact of her loss on the family.
In an emotional interview with The Guardian, the bereaved father recounted the struggles and sacrifices their impoverished family made to support his daughter’s dream of becoming a doctor. “She worked incredibly hard, dedicating herself entirely to her studies. All our hopes and aspirations were destroyed in a single night. We sent her to work, and the hospital returned her body to us. Our world has collapsed,” he lamented.
Expressing his profound grief, he added, “My daughter will never come back. I will never hear her voice or see her smile again. All I can do now is focus on getting her justice.”
The tragic incident occurred on August 9 when the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The following day, authorities arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the heinous crime. Subsequently, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a thorough and impartial probe.
The brutal rape and murder have sparked widespread outrage and prompted protests and strikes by medical professionals across India, highlighting concerns over safety and security within healthcare institutions.
The victim’s father emphasized that his daughter had aspired to pursue a career in medicine since childhood. Despite financial constraints and relying on his inconsistent earnings as a tailor, the family supported her unwavering commitment to helping others through medicine. “She once told me, ‘Papa, becoming a doctor is a noble way to help people.’ I encouraged her to follow her dreams, and now this is what has happened,” he recalled sorrowfully.
Adding another dimension to the case, the accused’s mother-in-law suggested the possible involvement of additional individuals in the crime, expressing doubt that Sanjoy Roy could have acted alone. Speaking to ANI, she described a troubled relationship between her daughter and Roy, alleging instances of domestic violence that led to a miscarriage and subsequent health issues. “Initially, things were fine for six months, but then he began abusing her. There was even a police complaint filed against him. He is not a good person. Punish him however you see fit, but I believe he couldn’t have committed this crime alone,” she stated.
As investigations continue, the family and the broader medical community await justice for the young doctor whose life was tragically cut short. The case has reignited discussions about the safety of women and the need for stricter measures to prevent such atrocities.
