Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on Ranchi’s District Election Officer in connection with a petition filed by BJP candidate Dr Jeetu Charan Ram, who challenged the election of Congress MLA Suresh Baitha from the Kanke Assembly seat.
Court Rejects Interlocutory Application
During the hearing, the Election Officer’s advocate filed an Interlocutory Application (IA), seeking to be removed from the case. The court, however, dismissed the request and termed it an inappropriate attempt to avoid legal responsibility. The bench also ordered the District Election Officer, who also serves as the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, to deposit the fine.
Petition Seeks Annulment of MLA’s Election
BJP’s Jeetu Charan Ram lost the 2024 Assembly election to Congress candidate Suresh Kumar Baitha by a margin of 968 votes. He has filed a petition demanding the annulment of Baitha’s election victory, citing alleged electoral irregularities.
