Puri, Odisha: The coastal pilgrim town of Puri is gearing up for the much-anticipated two-day Rath Yatra festival of Lord Jagannath, a historic event occurring after 53 years. President Droupadi Murmu will be among the lakhs of devotees witnessing the grand celebration on Sunday, with special arrangements made by the state government for her visit.
Officials have reported that the Odisha government has meticulously planned the festival’s smooth conduct, which traditionally spans a single day. However, due to unique celestial conditions, this year’s Rath Yatra will extend over two days, a rarity last observed in 1971.
In a significant departure from tradition, some rituals involving the three sibling deities—Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra—will take place on Sunday. The chariots are currently positioned in front of the Jagannath temple’s Lion’s Gate, ready to journey to the Gundicha temple, where they will remain for a week. Devotees will pull the chariots on Sunday afternoon.
The Rath Yatra this year will also include rituals like ‘Nabajouban Darshan’ and ‘Netra Utsav’ conducted on Sunday. Typically performed before the Rath Yatra, ‘Nabajouban Darshan’ marks the deities’ rejuvenated appearance after a 15-day quarantine known as ‘Anasara,’ following their excessive bathing on ‘Snana Purnima.’ ‘Netra Utsav’ involves painting the deities’ eyeballs anew.
Extensive preparations have been made to ensure the festival proceeds smoothly and punctually. Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain stated, “With the cooperation of all stakeholders, all rituals are progressing smoothly. With Lord Jagannath’s blessings, all other rituals will also follow the schedule.”
Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra confirmed the deployment of 180 platoons of security personnel from both state and central governments to maintain law and order and manage the massive crowds. Advanced AI-based CCTV cameras have been installed at key locations, including Badadanda, the festival venue, as stated by ADG (law and order) Sanjay Kumar.
Special security measures have been taken for President Murmu’s visit. A VIP zone has been designated for the Odisha Governor, Chief Minister, Union ministers, and other dignitaries, while a buffer zone is planned for the President. A dedicated team led by a senior SP rank officer will oversee her visit.
Expecting a crowd of 10 to 15 lakh, the fire service department has arranged 46 modern fire tenders throughout the town and along the sea beach. “As hot and humid weather is anticipated, water will be sprinkled on the crowd to provide relief,” said DG Fire Service Sudhanshu Sarangi.
Puri is set to welcome devotees and dignitaries alike for this momentous occasion, ensuring a safe and memorable Rath Yatra for all.
