IIT ISM opens labs for students of Ranchi, Sindri schools

Dhanbad, June 24: The students of Ranchi Shradhanand Bal Mandir Senior Secondary School, Kamre and DAV Public School, Sindri visited IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad, and took their first experience of lab research.

An IIT ISM official said that as per the Laboratory Visit Programme, a total of 44 students (from classes 9 to 12) of Ranchi and Sindri schools visited different laboratories and research facilities of the institute including, Naresh Vashisht Centre for Tinkering and Innovation (NVCTI), Mining Technology Innovation Hub TEXMiN, CIL Innovation Hub, Longwall Mine, Geological Museum, and Seismological Laboratory.

The students who were accompanied by their teachers also interacted with Prof Rajiv Shekhar, Director of IIT ISM, Prof Rajni Singh- dean (media & branding); Prof Pankaj Mishra- dean of Innovation Incubation of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Rajan Dasgupta- Executive Officer of NVCTI, and got information about labs.

Prof Shekhar gave them details of the initiative taken by the IIT ISM to promote the culture of innovation among the school students of remote areas of the state through the Jharkhand School Innovation Challenge (JH-SIC) programme. He also exhorted the visiting students to come forward with innovative ideas to find out solutions to challenges in the communities.

Prof Rajni Singh, dean (media & branding) of IIT (ISM) said the laboratory visit programme initiated by the Media & Branding office of the institute is intended to equip and inspire school students of Jharkhand to pursue future in Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics (STEM).

Prof Pankaj Mishra, dean (Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship) who is also the head of the NVCTI centre apprised students about the nitty-gritty of the Jharkhand School Innovation Challenge which provides the opportunity for the school students to sharpen their critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills.

One of the visiting students, Anuskha Kumari, a class XII student of DAV Public School, Sindri, observed that the experience was quite enriching and knowledge-enhancing as they came to know in detail about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
