New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the monsoon is shifting downward, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to coastal Kerala, Karnataka, and Konkan Goa this week. Significant rainfall is expected in these regions, prompting a red alert.

On Sunday, the Goa education department declared a holiday for schools up to Class 12 on Monday, July 15, due to heavy rainfall and the IMD’s red alert for parts of the state. Similarly, a red alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod in Kerala, while an orange alert covers Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Consequently, schools and colleges in six Kerala districts will remain closed on July 15.

The IMD predicts that parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa will receive over 20 cm of rain in the coming days. In Maharashtra, a red alert is in effect for Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri due to heavy showers.

While Mumbai and Palghar are under a yellow alert, Thane, Raigad, and Pune have an orange alert. Mumbai is experiencing heavy waterlogging in suburban areas amid continuous rain and thunderstorms.

For Delhi NCR, the IMD forecasts light rain and moderate winds in the coming days, but no color-coded alert has been issued for the capital. Rainfall on Saturday morning caused waterlogging and traffic snarls in parts of Delhi, bringing relief from the July heat. Neighboring Noida also saw rain, with visuals showing slow-moving traffic due to waterlogged roads.

“The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi,” IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar told ANI.

In Maharashtra, heavy rains have caused the Kamwari River in Thane’s Bhiwandi area to overflow, leading to water entering the houses of residents near the riverbanks.
