Chandigarh, April 1: Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab chief minister, submitted an official resolution in the Punjab assembly on Friday calling for the immediate transfer of Chandigarh to Punjab while respecting the people’s views and maintaining harmony. The resolution said that whenever a state was partitioned previously, the capital stayed with the parent state.

“For maintaining harmony and taking the sentiments of people into account, this house once again recommends to the state government to raise the matter with central government to immediately transfer Chandigarh to Punjab,” read the resolution.

Notably, after Haryana was created out of Punjab in 1966 and comprised the Hindi-speaking territories, Chandigarh became the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

The resolution also urged the Centre to uphold the Constitution’s federalism principles and refrain from taking any actions that would upset the balance in Chandigarh’s management and that of other common assets such as the BBMB (Bhakra Beas Management Board).

Earlier, Union home minister Amit Shah declared on Sunday that the Chandigarh administration’s service conditions will now be aligned with those of the Central Civil Services. While the home ministry claims that this will provide various benefits to Chandigarh UT employees, AAP, Congress, and SAD politicians consider it as a major setback for Punjab’s rights.
