Islamabad: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called off its protest in Islamabad’s Red Zone, which began on November 24, following a government crackdown. The announcement came through a press release on Wednesday as law enforcement agencies dispersed demonstrators from the high-security area.
PTI’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Bushra Bibi, the wife of PTI chief Imran Khan, reportedly exited the protest site amid the operation.
The party’s media cell stated: “In light of the government’s brutality and plans to turn the federal capital into a slaughterhouse for unarmed citizens, we are announcing the temporary suspension of our peaceful protest.” PTI also indicated that further actions would be determined based on guidance from their leader, Imran Khan.
Background of the Protest
The demonstrations were part of a broader PTI campaign demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August. Thousands of supporters rallied in the Red Zone, which is home to key government offices, in a show of strength against the current regime.
Clashes and Casualties
The protests escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces, resulting in the deaths of at least six people, including four security personnel. The heavy-handed approach by authorities sparked condemnation from PTI leaders, who accused the government of using excessive force.
What’s Next for PTI?
The temporary suspension of the protest does not mark the end of PTI’s movement. The party hinted at future actions, emphasizing that any decision will align with directives from Imran Khan, whose arrest has galvanized supporters across Pakistan.
Ongoing Political Crisis
This development adds to the growing political instability in Pakistan, as PTI continues to challenge the government’s actions. With Imran Khan still behind bars, the next phase of PTI’s strategy will likely shape the country’s political discourse in the coming weeks.
